The journals have been spilling over with holiday offerings, and I can't claim to have read them all. But I have read and enjoyed quite a few. Here are my favorites - perhaps you'll like them as well.
Protect Thy Heaven by pekeleke It’s after the war, Harry and Severus are both professors at Hogwarts and Harry has fallen for Severus. With his love unrequited, he turns to a gift from George to find his little bit of Heaven. Written to art provided by phoenixcharm180, this first-person tale is both intense and lovely.
Between Constellations by lucius_complex I’m not the first to rec this stunning story, and hope I won’t be the last. It’s uniquely told in the second person and presents a story of compassion, forgiveness and healing in the midst of an AU war with Voldemort.
The Beginning of a Journey by roozetter Harry uses a series of commissioned portraits to convince Severus to marry him. Severus’ conversations with the portraits – and their interactions with each other – are priceless and inspired. And the chairs…oh…the chairs!
The Heart of Christmas by rycolfan Severus spends an unexpectedly chaotic and happy Christmas at Harry’s with Harry and his three children. Sweet, funny and heart-warming.
Waiting to Divide by emynn A story of soul mates, separated by time. When an author presents a time-travel fic without losing me in the paradoxes, it’s an automatic win. This one wins on many other levels, too. The story is engaging and the resolution totally satisfying.
What We Were (or This Mess We’re in) by avioleta Another lovely fic by avioleta, this one featuring one of the best Severus’ I have read in a long time, and an unhappily-married Harry. Wonderful writing, poignant and beautiful.
Now See the Invisible by green This first-person narrative features beautiful prose told with genuine feeling. Harry, dealing with too-powerful magic just after the war, works with a not-really-dead Snape to learn control.
Something to Remember (so they won’t forget) by roozetter An eighth year story of recovery told so honestly that I will long remember it. The Harry and Severus story focuses less on the why and more on the “because.” Secondary characters are strong and well-developed but not overpowering. Lovely all around.
The Acquiesco Variant by abrae Snape, on the Dark Lord’s orders, uses a form of Legilimancy to invade Harry’s dreams. The language is so lyrical, and the story hopeful even amidst the devastation of the end of sixth year. Beautifully told and rendered.
The House that Harry Built by asecretchord or jeshakeoma A warm, uplifting Christmas story featuring Severus rebuilding his life after the war with Cat and the assistance of Neville, Luna and an unknown benefactor. Very original ideas and great story telling.
Third Time Lucky by accioslash A very small story flawlessly structured, building on itself in three tiny acts.
And finally, some recs, all but one of them Snarry, that weren't part of the Secret Snarry Swap.
Over on LJ, veridari and joanwilder have just finished publishing a drabble/drawble collaboration titled “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” They each gave the other six prompts and have compiled the results into a series of drawings and ficlets. They’re published in both veridari and jw’s journals on Live Journal and linked from Snape_Potter, with the first on Christmas Eve. Read them all, but if you want a sneak peak, try the (NWS) Day 4 Mistletoe Manip, the surprising Day 7 Nativity and the terribly cute Day 9 Bubble Gnome.
And finally, the Severus Sighs community held a last minute End of the World Fuckathon Friday on December 21st. Happily, the world didn’t end, there is still an internet, and you can visit Severus Sighs to read the following recs:
The Last Night of the World by abrae lived up to abrae’s typical lyrical, textured work. And oh, the angst and…the sex? Abrae wrote sex? Indeed she did!
Four Times Severus Lost his Virginity and the One Time He Didn’t by torino10154 is perfectly described by the title. The timeline is backward and there’s no Snarry here but the surprise pairings (all five of them) make the reading even more fun.
I've had a great time reading. Now I'll get back to writing. roozetter has requested a rare pair fic and I'm working myself up to it...
